You can also—so long as you're attentive—eat, drink, rub your hands together in anticipation like a cartoon villain. The entry-level XT6 Luxury is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. GM Is Not Cancelling Ultra Cruise, Just Merging It With Super Cruise.

Brand adds CT4, CT5 and Escalade to the mix.

For years, Super Cruise was limited to divided highways that GM had laser mapped and approved for use. But starting with its model year 2023 vehicles, the company started adding nondivided state and federal highways, which are sometimes called routes — main roads that connect smaller cities and towns. That includes popular roads like US Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Overseas Highway, and the Trans-Canada Highway. Cadillac Super Cruise debuted in 2017 for the CT6 and has received critical praise from the media and industry commentators.

I’M ON A COMPATIBLE ROAD ARE THERE ANY OTHER LIMITATIONS ON USING SUPER CRUISE?

Read the vehicle’s owner’s manual for important feature limitations and information. The world’s first true hands-free driver assistance feature for the highway. The Super Cruise† feature is available, with the OnStar Safety and Security Plan, on 2018 CT6 models produced on September 6th, 2017, and later. Updates to Super Cruise have come largely from customer feedback. Based on that feedback, Cadillac implemented easier activation methods, along with messages that inform drivers why Super Cruise may not be available in certain areas.

Precision LiDAR Map Data

A voice tells you that the system is shutting off for good—I imagined it was Mary Barra—and then you must shut off the engine to get Super Cruise back. The addition of Caddy's hands-free highway driving assistant makes the XT6 one of the most interesting luxury SUVs on the road -- but there's a catch. To turn Super Cruise off, press the Super Cruise button again or firmly take control of steering and press your brake pedal. Super Cruise can also be turned off by pressing the Adaptive Cruise Control ON/OFF or CANCEL button, or pulling the Regen On Demand paddle toward you on an EV.

Visually, the XT6 hasn't changed much since I last found myself behind the wheel of the 2020 model. The SUV is as handsome as ever with the automaker's angular aesthetic and hallmark vertical LED light signatures at either end. Updates for the 2023 model year include new Latte and Rosewood metallic paint colors, optional 21-inch wheels for the more agile Sport trim level and standard Brembo brakes with red calipers for that same spec. This Premium Luxury model showcases exactly none of those changes, but is noteworthy as the sweet spot in the XT6 lineup.

However, Cadillac forces customers to add it as part of a pricey $8,850 bundle with adaptive cruise control, magnetic ride control, and many unrelated features. This package is only available on the Premium Luxury trim and above, starting at $84,890. Speaking of the Interstate, the longest I spent without touching the wheel of this Escalade was about 150 miles on my way from Philadelphia to Boston. Generally, the only time the system wasn't enabled is when I had to change highways or if there was a construction zone. It was always just a matter of time until it came back online, though.

You click the button, a strip of light on the steering wheel turns green, and then that's it. Hands are off the wheel, eyes are on the road, away you go down the Interstate. Early in a Lane Change On Demand maneuver, you can cancel it by moving the turn signal stalk away from the direction of the lane change. When you do this, your vehicle will return to its original lane and the Super Cruise symbol will remain green. At any time during the maneuver, you can cancel Lane Change On Demand by manually steering. The Super Cruise symbol will turn blue when you do this and the maneuver will be canceled.

Super Cruise works as well here as it did when it debuted back in 2018 on the CT6 sedan, rounding bendy highway segments confidently and reacting predictably to changes in traffic. However, the larger XT6 feels like it crowds the left edge of the lane, which makes it difficult to get truly comfortable in the heavy traffic situations where the tech would be most useful. Admittedly, the lanes around my neck of the woods are a touch narrow, but I'd love it if a future version of Super Cruise allowed me to tweak or trim lane-keeping margins on either side. The V6 receives an EPA estimate of 21 mpg combined on regular gas, breaking out to 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for front-wheel drive or 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for all-wheel drive. The more efficient four-cylinder is estimated at 23 mpg combined city and 27 highway, 21 city and 26 highway for FWD or AWD, respectively -- but sips more expensive premium fuel. That means the I4 is more expensive to operate annually than the V6, according to the EPA's cost calculation tools.

A key part of that is expanding the road network — in this case nearly doubling it again — with LiDAR mapped highways. High precision LiDAR mapping gives us an operating domain where we are confident in Super Cruise’s abilities.”– Anantha Kancherla, GM vice president of ADAS. With Lane Change on Demand (offered on select 2021–2023 Super Cruise-equipped vehicles, excludes 2022 and 2023 XT6), Super Cruise can steer to perform a single lane change under certain conditions when requested by the driver. The newest version of Super Cruise provides automated lane changing that’s activated by flicking the turn signal stalk. However, if the lane you’re about to move into is going to end, narrowing down or merging, Super Cruise won’t execute the lane change.

It's tough to park by yourself, the automatic parking system doesn't work very well, and it takes up most of its own lane. Super Cruise feels great in something this big because it's so comfortable, but there were multiple instances during my time with the Escalade that I wished I was in something smaller. But what really makes all of this work—what makes this new rolling house you're in feel like somewhere you want to spend time—is the interior you get with the top-of-the-range "Platinum" trim. The previous "Premium Luxury" Escalade I had felt solid and luxurious. The wood is some of the most ornate and tasteful I've ever seen in a vehicle, every soft-touch plastic surface in the cheaper car is now upholstered in supple white cotton.

Because Super Cruise is not something you're going to want to live without once you've had a taste. It handled every traffic situation I encountered, from twisty dual carriageways like New England's Merrit Parkway to erratic drivers between Boston and Philadelphia. It stayed in the center of its lane, it slowed down for tighter corners, and if other drivers got too close—truck drivers, mostly—it would nudge itself over to make you feel a little better. If you don't regain control when Super Cruise tells you it's going to shut off, the car gradually begins decelerating until it turns on the hazard lights and stops completely. If you're a repeat offender and must re-enable the system multiple times, it will eventually lock you out altogether.

Select compatible Cadillac models equipped with Super Cruise can steer to perform a single lane change under certain conditions,† if Lane Change On Demand capability is enabled in the vehicle’s Settings menu. Super Cruise is not available when Teen Driver is active.Super Cruise will not brake the vehicle when approaching an intersection that is controlled by a traffic light or stop sign. Super Cruise will not detect vehicles crossing the road ahead, including at intersections, and will not automatically steer or brake to prevent a collision. It is important that you always stay engaged and vigilant at all times while driving.Consult your Owner’s Manual for further limitations.

The company plans on adding around 40,000 miles of new roads every quarter over the course of two years, so by the end of 2025, Super Cruise will cover approximately 750,000 miles in the US and Canada. Super Cruise requires a working electrical system, cell reception and GPS signal. After the initial Super Cruise trial included with vehicle purchase ends, it also requires an eligible OnStar®† plan (stand-alone Super Cruise plan). Remember, when you’re using Super Cruise, you must pay attention while driving and should not use a hand-held device.
